clearly I'm not alone in deploring the use of the word or term [!?] 'sublime' in regard to art and works considering its provenance.
Simon - maybe you could provide a bit more background/context for this claim? My understanding of it's provenance is that it stems from chemistry and refers to a substance that undergoes a phase transition at a certain temperature and transforms from a solid directly into a vapour without going through an intermediate liquid stage. It's also - apropos the name of this list - considered a synonym for empyreal.
There's also a lovely definition I just found on google "well-meaning ineptitude that rises to empyreal absurdity" by M.S. Dworkin (?)
